    Background

My research focuses on how and why historically underserved groups appropriate information and communication technologies (ICT). I have designed, implemented and assessed community computing projects in economically challenged neighborhoods in Atlanta, GA and West Philadelphia and Harrisburg, PA. My current research examines the performance of racial and ethnic identities in virtual communities, ICT education and workforce participation, and the influence of racial, class and gender identities on health information seeking and content creation using social media. My teaching activities focus on the social impacts of ICT. I have received awards in teaching excellence including the Penn State Alumni Association's 2014 Teaching Fellow Award, and the 2013 Faculty Achievement Award and the 2013 George J. McMurtry Teaching and Learning Award from the College of IST at Penn State. Specialties: qualitative research methods, critical social theory, public scholarship, identity and new media
